  • The Routine That Saved my Skin From Rosacea

April 14, 2021

how to get rid of rosacea?

It's not always straightforward to diagnose rosacea as there are many subtypes, manifestation and triggers that can be different from one person to another. Sometimes it is mistaken with dermatitis, acne or other skin conditions. It is also not easy to completely treat rosacea once and for all, as many of its triggers are in the environment we live in, our food intake, stress levels etc. But through the years and my experience with skincare, I have realized that first and foremost it is critical to keep my skin barrier strong. As soon as I feel my skin barrier is compromised, I stop whatever I am doing; whether trying new skincare products or indulging in unfriendly foods for an extended time; and go back to my basic healing routine to get my skin back in check. I have a mild case of rosacea; that has tremendously improved through the years. I hope the below routine and lifestyle tips I have adopted after trying on so many products can help rosacea sufferers heal, decrease the intensity or prevent skin flares. It is worth giving it a try before starting on a never ending journey of invasive products, chemicals and antibiotics. This being said, it is important to be in touch with your skin and know when to consult a dermatologist or a nutritionist. The research tells us that nutrition plays a huge role in many of the systemic skin conditions such as severe acne, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea and others and therefore along with any treatment you decide to follow we strongly advise you to consult with a nutritionist and make recommended changes in the nature of your food plans to really see an improvement.

The Main Daily Healing Routine for Rosacea

Three products constitute the daily routine with the Restorative Cleansing Balm by de Mamiel, the foundation of the routine and the main Healer. Followed by Opuntia Revival Day Oil in the morning and Opuntia Revival Night Oil for the evening. In the routine as well two masks that are an integral part of the routine and play a major role in healing and strengthening your skin, to be used alternatively every week: Max & Me Mask and Wash and Tata Harper Purifying Mask

STEP 1.

Restorative Cleansing Balm by de Mamiel

This is your first Healer. Not only if you suffer from rosacea, but also if you have sensitive skin, dry skin or skin that is acting out. It deeply cleanses while being very gentle on the skin. It is called restorative because it restores the main functions of your skin while giving it strength and favouring cells renewal. Filled with skin loving ingredients such as Marula, Camelia (Vitamin E), Omega 9, squalene and most importantly Cape Chamomille that reduces redness with its anti-inflammatory properties. What's more the scents of this balm relax the nervous system and you feel your day's stresses just went away ( I kid you not!)

STEP 2.

Spritz your face with a gentle essence.

I add an essence after the cleansing step. It is a step that i never forgo. I think it is essential for a fast rebalance of the skin PH and minimise the stress on your skin, amongst other benefits. I have found two that work for my rosacea skin: de Mamiel Dewy Facial Mist and Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence

STEP 3.

Opuntia Revival Oils

Cold pressed, virgin and unrefined Prickly Pear oil, mixed with Red Raspberry, Rice Bran, Avocado, Carrot, Neroli, Geranium Bourbon, Palmarosa,  Lavender Spike, Spanish Sage, Angelica Root, Wild Carrot. It is not any mix of oils that will heal your skin and minimize the redness while giving you a plethora of other skin enhancing benefits from rosacea friendly oils (not all oils are rosacea friendly) enhancing oil. I found that this combination and the quality of the oils used is ideal to hydrate, heal, protect and contribute to anti aging and a glowing complexion.

The Essential Weekly Steps

Manuka Honey Mask and Wash by Max & Me

Max and Me Mask & Wash

This is is your second Master Healer. It's a weekly treatment for skin that needs major healing. Made with Raw Manuka Honey that has anti microbial properties, Balinese Cacao Powder, Mountain Lavender, Mangosteen and other high vibrational natural ingredients that will boost skin self healing abilities, brighten and even out skin tone. Pollution detox and Purifying Mask by Tata Harper

Tata Harper Purifying Mask

This mask has been a staple in my weekly routine to purge and detox the pores from the bad oils and impurities stuck in the deeper layers of the skin and that are responsible for the congested red look on your cheeks and pustules like red pimples. Formulated with white clay, broccoli and probiotics it will rebalance your skin, gently fights pollutants and free radicals that aggress and weaken your skin. The detoxing process will give your skin a renewed strength

Understand Your Skin and Adapt Your Routine

It is important while you are in the healing stage to keep your routine minimal for a couple of weeks, following the above steps only. Pause the other products that you have, you may or may not go back to them (some of them might turn out to be part of the problem...). You might discover that they were too aggressive or too heavy/greasy for your rosacea.

Once you feel your routine is well in place and your skin is more balanced and feels more comfortable you can start reintroducing products that you feel are essential to you if you need to address other concerns such as anti aging. Below are some tips:

1. You still have to be careful about how you chose your products. Keep them clean of course! If a product doesn't feel adapted with your sensitive rosacea area you can still use it on other parts of your face and skip the cheeks for example. In my case for example I use my deep wrinkle solution Tata Harper Elixir Vitae only on my forehead where I need it the most and skip the cheeks because it is too aggressive for my cheeks. Instead I use the Rejuvenating Serum all over the face including my cheeks because it is mild enough for my rosacea and effective as an anti aging.  I use a similar approach on my chin. To prevent hormonal breakouts on my chin, I use the anti breakouts agent and tonic by Susanne Kaufmann (Active Agent Clarifying and Clarifying Tonic) during the week preceding my period. Again I avoid the cheeks areas.

2. When you have rosacea be gentle when applying/massaging your products in and when drying your face with a towel, no harsh rubbing.

3. Favor an enzymatic exfoliation when you need to exfoliate and not a mechanical exfoliator that could be harsh on your skin. While more resilient skins can exfoliate once a week or more often, if you have rosacea you need to have less frequent exfoliation, once every 2 to 3 weeks. You can use for example Susanne Kaufmann Enzyme Peel for sensitive skin.

4. Very hot or very cold water on your face is also not recommended. Lukewarm is good.

Nutrition is an Integral Part of the Rosacea Healing Process

The research says- as well as my experience and the experience of thousands of people around the world- that your gut affects the health of your skin. When you are suffering from systemic skin conditions such as rosacea and others, you have to look as well at the type of food you are having if you are serious about long term healing. Therefore, I encourage you to seek the advice of a specialized nutritionist if you have severe cases of rosacea, acne, psoriasis eczema etc. Personally, one type of nutritional change in my diet that has helped my rosacea, skin inflammation and wellbeing in general is the focus on a more alkaline diet. I was largely inspired by Hanna Silitoe book "Radiant" on the type of food that could trigger skin inflammation and use her Alkaline/Acidic chart very often as a reference. You can find your own source of inspiration from trusted practitioners.
